I began practising yoga around 1997 attending various classes in Suffolk and London. My interest in yoga developed far more seriously during my first trip to India in 2001. For two months I attended classes at the Sivananda Centre in New Delhi. I returned to India in 2003 and spent Christmas at the Sivananda Ashram in Kerala for a yoga 'vacation'.
In 2004 I took the Sivananda Teachers Training Course at the Sivananda Dhanwantari Ashram in South India and qualified as a Sivananda Yoga Teacher.
Kamala is the spiritual name I was given during this Teachers Training Course. Kamala is another name for the goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and fortune and a consort of Vishnu the preserver of life.
Over the past couple of years my personal practice has led me to other styles of yoga both here and in India, and I have become gripped with the energy and dynamic flow of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. The practice uncurls on the mat as a moving meditation. As my practice has evolved this has of course influenced my teaching. At the end of 2007 I studied with David Swenson and undertook his Ashtanga immerson course. Spring 2008 I spent a month in Mysore, the home of the living Guru of Ashtanga Yoga Sri K Pattabhi Jois and practiced under the guidance of his Grandson Sharath and daughter Saraswati. My desire for learning took me to Stillpoint in November last year, the home of senior teachers John & Lucy Scott in New Zealand, where I completed Level One of their inspirational month long Teacher Training Course, I am looking forward to returning to Stillpoint very soon to complete Level Two!
